Captain's Nautical Sundial Compass

Our brass sundial compass is a lovely replica of the original made in 1750 by Roger Rangers. Nautical sundials have remained simple tools, unchanged over thousands of years, and are known as the first scientific instruments. Like sundials, antique compasses used the Earth’s magnetic field.

The hinged top uses a curved scale to set your local latitude angle, while the magnetic compass orients the sundial North. A needle lift mechanism protects the compass's jeweled bearing during transport. The sun's shadow cast by the sundial's vane indicates the local time.

The top is flat, with the latitude scale and sundial vane hinged for compact storage.
