There is a movie called 300 with Gerard Butler portraying events from the ancient battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes.

Leonidas would wear full armor and is equipped with a sword, a javelin, and a shield. Leonidas and the Spartans would use swords at range as they approach the enemy army, these swords serve to destroy or disable the enemy shields, making them vulnerable to the following attacks. A javelin is thrown from a distance in order to take down the enemy from afar.
